Delete-on-listen : Under My Skin

I was trying to write. Came up with some chords. Sang a melody. Somehow it ended up being an ish cover of "Under My Skin". I liked it. Loved playing it. Didn't know what to do with it.

So I recorded a whole bunch of different versions of it - very quickly. Each in one take, like a recorded live performance.

The below will randomly select and play one of these versions.BUT each version can only be listened to once. Ever. Because once you've listened to it, it will be automatically deleted. So listen carefully. Cos once you've finished, it's gone.

Q. What's the point?

A. Well, maybe this is a rather pretty and poignant way to capture and deliver a performance for one - althouth objectively its remote and impersonal, it's also quite intimate and exclusive. ALso I like the fact that it makes the listening act responsible, and potentially therefore more engaged - or just malign, your choice.


Q. I like the version that I just listened to, how can I hear it again?

A. You cant, its deleted.


Q. Is it really deleted?

A. Yes.


Q. How many versions have you done?

A. Probably more than enough - my guess is that not many people will listen past the 30 second mark, which is a shame. I'll do some more versions anyway.


Q. Do you think you're some sort of performance artists now or what?

A. Well, no, but I do very much like the fact that I can now do these sort of experimental things with far more freedom and control than would ever be possible on Spotify et al.


Q. Why cant you just release songs on Spotify like normal no-hope solo proto-musicians who are going through a protracted mid-life crisis?

A. Good question.
